THE “BIG FIVE”
The lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. Known across Africa as the “Big Five”, these mammals are the figureheads of the continent’s mission to protect its endangered species. They are also the names given to each of the five Defenders sent to Kenya to support this year’s marathon.
As runners braved the punishing heat of the African plains, Defender was on hand to support them—ferrying medical and race personnel wherever they were needed and transporting media crews across the rugged, challenging course.
GOING THE DISTANCE
The significance of this event extends far beyond the finish line. Funds raised through the marathon play a vital role in supporting conservation efforts across the reserve. But its impact does not stop there.
Recognising the complex relationship between wildlife and communities, the marathon also channels resources to support the local community, investing in education and healthcare for people living near Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
Throughout Defender’s presence at the marathon, we connected participants and campaigners with the communities they support. By hosting events in neighbouring villages and providing transport, we brought people together to see the education and infrastructure projects making a positive impact on local lives every day.
It is projects like these that embody the joint mission of Defender and Tusk to overcome challenges across Sub-Saharan Africa. After all, creating real change is a marathon, not a sprint.
